Minimalist Photography

The subject of Minimalism is basically one showing a minimal amount of detail or objects in the image. This gives a feeling of stillness, often achieved using photographic techniques such as the use of a slow shutter speed to make water look still, or capture the movement in clouds.

This project is a continuing work-in-progress; more will be added to it in due course.

The Milarrochy Oak, Loch Lomond

This image used a long exposure at sunset, with this famous little tree silhouetted against the waters of Loch Lomond and the hills in the background. The grasses in the shallow waters of the foreground also give it a sense of place. A lovely spot to spend a few hours waiting for the colours to appear!

Portobello Beach markers

This image also used a long exposure to still the water and give a painterly feel to the sea at Portobello Beach, Edinburgh.

The marker here is used to show the end of the wooden groyne which is hidden by the high tide - it can just be seen by the slightly darker blue dots in the middle of the image in the foreground. Shot on a rather chilly but beautifully sunny March morning.

Belhaven Bridge - “The Bridge To Nowhere”

This bridge sits in the bay at Dunbar, and is accessible when the tide is out along a walkway. With the tide in, the walkway is covered and shows a bridge which seems puzzlingly isolated in the water.

Shot on a stormy evening with a very long 10-minute exposure to still the choppy waters. The tripod was wedged into the sand to ensure no movement whatsoever from the wind, keeping the details pin-sharp.

Inchkeith Island, Firth of Forth

Shot at low tide from Cramond Beach, Inchkeith is one of the larger islands set in the Firth of Forth. This image was taken late afternoon, and I waited for a few nicely puffy clouds to waft over the island before taking the shot. The thin line of water on the horizon belies the extent of this body of water, which would have been significant even at low tide.

Inchkeith Island (2)

Having waited for the sun to set, this image was taken from Cramond Beach with the tide of the River Forth well in. I was rewarded with beautiful faint pink colours in the sky on this evening, although it was shot in an easterly direction so this was an unexpected treat.
